Dr. Jonathan Barrus

Dr. Jonathan Barrus

Dr. Barrus is an Emmett native and attended medical school at Western University in Pomona, CA. He completed a Family Medicine Residency with Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. He is also certified in Surgical Obstetrics to perform c-sections, and completed a one-year teaching fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Following residency, Dr. Barrus worked as a hospitalist handling inpatient and ICU care at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario, OR, and directly treated critical patients throughout the COVID-19 crisis.  He was able to accomplish his lifelong goal of returning to Emmett to practice family medicine in his hometown, and is currently credentialed to delivery babies and perform c-sections at West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell, ID.

Dr. Barrus has a special passion for delivering babies, and focuses on providing quality pregnancy care for expecting moms in Gem County. He is currently one of two doctors practicing in Emmett who is certified to perform c-sections. He also loves working with children and teenagers, and spends much of his free time volunteering with the EHS basketball and tennis teams.

Dr. Barrus is married and has 6 wonderful kids.  He served an LDS mission in Apia, Samoa, and has volunteered for medical service trips in Haiti, Peru, and Samoa. He enjoys sailing, downhill mountain biking, skiing, and a good construction project.

Dr. Brett T. Mumford

Dr. Brett Mumford was inspired to pursue a career in medicine as a result of receiving lifesaving care by his childhood doctor. He attended medical school at Western University of Health Sciences and completed Idaho State University’s Family Medicine Residency Program with an emphasis in rural medicine. He speaks Spanish and has been practicing medicine for over 20 years, which has included full spectrum family medicine, baby deliveries with certification to perform c-sections, and rural emergency medicine and urgent care.

As a family medicine physician, Dr. Mumford believes serving people is the most important aspect of being a doctor. He strives to help his patients understand their conditions and guide them toward overall health, which includes physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing.

Dr. Mumford is married, has 5 children, and currently has 4.5 grandchildren. He volunteers with his church and enjoys running marathons with his wife, Alison, including the Boston Marathon and the original Athens Marathon in Greece. Dr. Mumford also has a special passion for volunteering for medical service trips all over the world, including Haiti, Peru, Thailand, Myanmar, New Zealand, Turkey, and Poland.

Jake Michelsen, PA-C

Jake Michelsen was born in Hawaii, graduated from high school in Montana, and received a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Spanish from the University of Utah.  After college, Jake attended Idaho State University for his Master’s in Physician Assistant Studies with an emphasis in Hispanic Healthcare. Jake particularly enjoys urgent care and has a deep-rooted desire to help others, especially underserved populations. In his role at Gem Family Medicine, Jake attends to a wide range of medical conditions and situations, including same-day procedures, joint injections, laceration repair, and managing minor acute conditions.

Jake has a calm and reassuring demeanor, making him an excellent urgent care provider.  He also strives to ensure that patients have a clear understanding of their diagnosis and treatment options, empowering them to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Jake’s diverse knowledge in urgent medicine allows him to offer patients relief and refer them to further care, if necessary.  His empathetic approach ensures that patients feel heard and understood, allowing for a trusting and collaborative relationship.   

Jake is married to a local girl from Emmett, and truly loves this small town and practicing rural medicine. Together they have three incredible children and, in his free time, Jake enjoys playing (or watching) soccer, lifting weights, serving others, and adventuring with his family. He previously volunteered on a Spanish-speaking mission in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and plans to continue serving third world countries with medical service missions in the future.
